Summer Work Travel USA

Work. Travel. Experience America.

Spend your university summer experiencing American culture, gaining international work experience, improving your English, and building friendships from around the world

What Is Summer Work Travel?

The Summer Work Travel (SWT) Program is a U.S. Department of State BridgeUSA cultural exchange program that enables eligible international university students to spend their long summer vacation in the United States participating in temporary work opportunities while experiencing American culture and communities.

The program is designed to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding — not simply employment in the United States. Illuminate Global assists qualified students throughout the program process and works in cooperation with U.S. Department of State-designated J-1 program sponsors and qualified host employers.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants generally:

  • Are enrolled in and actively pursuing a degree or other full-time course of study at an accredited, classroom-based post-secondary institution outside the United States
  • Have successfully completed at least one semester of post-secondary study
  • Have sufficient English proficiency to communicate effectively in an English-speaking environment
  • Meet the eligibility and screening requirements of the designated J-1 sponsor

Especially well-suited for university students who want to improve their English, experience American culture, and build international experience over their summer break.
