Program Overview

The J-1 Intern and Trainee Programs provide eligible international university students, recent graduates and professionals with opportunities to participate in structured, guided, career-related internship or training programs in the United States.

These are cultural and professional exchange programs — not ordinary U.S. employment programs. Each program must follow an approved Training/Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) developed for the participant and host organization.

Illuminate Global works with qualified U.S. host organizations and designated J-1 sponsors to assist eligible participants in accessing appropriate internship and training opportunities.

Program Facts

  • International students typically live off-campus in privately owned residence halls, homestays, or furnished apartments. Non-UCLA housing options are available year-round, with students booking directly with housing providers. On-campus housing at UCLA is offered exclusively during the summer.

  • The courses, taught by professors from the University of California, Los Angeles, cover a wide range of subjects.

  • Participants can choose to study in person or online, providing flexibility in their learning experience.

  • By taking advantage of these transfer credit courses, students can save undergraduate time and costs, including tuition and living expenses.

  • They can also earn up to 36 credits of bachelor's degree courses, helping them fulfill graduate program prerequisites or earn unit credit toward a bachelor's degree.

  • Students can select several experiential courses to further enhance their learning journey.

  • The duration of the courses ranges from 3 months to 12 months, depending on course selection and credits needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What's the difference between Intern and Trainee status?

Intern status is for current students or recent graduates (within 12 months); Trainee status is for professionals with prior related work experience or an advanced degree. See the comparison table above.

  • Do I need a job offer before applying?

You'll need a matched host organization and an approved DS-7002 Training/Internship Plan before the sponsor can proceed — Illuminate Global assists with host matching as part of the process.

  • Can this lead to a full-time job in the U.S.?

J-1 Intern/Trainee status is a training and cultural exchange category with defined program length and specific post-program requirements set by the Department of State; it should not be treated as a path to unrestricted U.S. employment.
